From Hveragerdi we will drive to beautiful Thingvellir National Park, a place of tremendous interest as a primary site of both Iceland’s geological and historical heritage. Walk through the geological fault known as Almannagja - the place where Europe’s oldest national legislative assembly, the Icelandic Althing, was established in the year 930 AD, and where it convened in grandiose surroundings every summer for nearly eight centuries. After your walk in Thingvellir, the tour continues over the Lyngdalsheidi heath into the fertile farmlands of the south, to visit the most beautiful waterfall of the country, Gullfoss. Nearby, you’ll also stop at the Geysir geothermal area with its multitude of hot springs, where the most active one, Strokkur, spouts every few minutes. Returning through the Grimsnes region you will pass Hveragerdi village, where geothermal water has been used to build up an extensive greenhouse industry. Your last stop is at Hellisheiði Geothermal Power Plant, Icelanders use of clean, green geothermal energy has long since surpassed that of any nation in the world.  More than 90% of all houses in Iceland are heated with geothermal energy.  The Hellisheidi Power Plant combines a high tech exhibition, experienced guides and a look into this extraordinary aspect of daily life in Iceland. An impressive building with magnificent views over the surrounding lavafields and pillars of geothermal steam.  Return to Hveragerdi in the late afternoon.
